Information about Boy Scout Troop 156, Glenview Illinois

Troop 156 is celebrating 50 years of Boy Scouting.  Based at Glenview Community Church, Troop&Crew 156 is not only the oldest group in the district, but one of the largest and most active boy scout organizations in Metropolitan Chicago.

This is a "boy led" troop with emphasis on teaching leadership ability as well as other important life skills and values. Outdoor adventures, service projects and other events are scheduled year-round, with at least one each month. It's not uncommon to have as many as three different outings and projects the boys can choose from. There are also weekly troop meetings where scouts can socialize and work on advancements and merit badges.

In addition to the traditional Boy Scout troop, this organization also includes a Venturing Crew made up of high school men and women. Many of the "V-crew's" activities involve high adventure skills such as rock climbing or wilderness camping.

Mike Nicholson is the Scoutmaster, leading a dedicated team of parents who are involved as committee members, assistant scout masters and volunteers. There are some 25 uniformed men and women adult leaders serving with Pat Heneghan as the Troop Committee Chair.

Troop 156 is proud to have a diverse culture comprised of different races and religions as well as age groups. This adds a wealth of experience for all of the scouts.

The Story of "Spiderman"

John Lichtenheld was a Life Scout at Troop 156.      Before he lost his battle with leukemia in November of 2000, he designed a special logo as a school project that symbolized his life. The Black Widow spider represents strength and personal empowerment while the upward pointing arrow symbolizes self control, a virtue of the Boy Scout Order of The Arrow that we are proud to have had John be a part of.

His close friend, Keith Tanaka adapted John's design, and only scouts of Troop 156 wear this very special badge honoring his memory.
